Meet The Linda Lindas, a punk group with 10-year-old Mila, 13-year-old Eloise, 14-year-old Lucia, and 16-year-old Bela. They’re not your average punk band. These are tween and teen girls who aren’t afraid to speak up. They’re the next big thing, the coolest kids in school, and their latest song has caught the attention of millions of people. Playing at the Los Angeles Public Library on May 4 to honor its Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the group of half-Asian, half-Latinx musicians performed a new original track, “Racist Sexist Boy,” in the concert. And while their other songs are incredible, and they’ve been around for a while doing very impressive things, it’s this new song that brought them into a larger spotlight. The song is a giant middle finger to prejudice these girls have faced even in their young years. “A little while before we went into lockdown, a boy came up to me in my class and said that his dad told him to stay away from Chinese people,” the drummer said before introducing their song “Racist, Sexist Boys.” “After I told him that I was Chinese, he backed away from me. Eloise and I wrote this song based on that experience.” “So this is about him and all the other racist, sexist boys in the world,” they shouted before putting their powerful voices into action in full punk power that we can feel right to our bones. These girls aren’t just impressive because of their age or the content of their music, they’re wildly musically talented, and the fact that they’re using their skills to topple the world, unabashed, is what makes them so easy to root for. The video of their library concert hit over 44,000 views with an additional 1.2 million views on Twitter. Some big names lend their support to the group, with Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine tweeted that The Linda Lindas had the song of the day. Watch out, world. The Linda Lindas are taking over, and we’re so excited about it.
