The set began as an idea from Leandro Tayag, an amateur Lego designer from the Philippines. He submitted a design to Lego Ideas, an online platform that allows fans to create their own designs and gather supporters in the hopes that they will become official Lego sets. After just three weeks, it received more than 10,000 votes, evidence of just how dedicated the Voltron fan community is. Lego announced that it would produce the set, and professional LEGO designer Niek Duco van Slagmaat tweaked Tayag’s design to ensure it met the standards for official LEGO sets. True to the shows, the set is made up of five lion figures that attach together at “extra-strong joints” to form Voltron. At 2,321 pieces, Voltron is the biggest buildable action figure LEGO has produced, easily surpassing the 452-piece Star Wars Scout Trooper & Speeder Bike released earlier this year. It stands 15″ tall, with four three-inch lions forming the extremities and a six-inch lion figure serving as the torso and head. And don’t worry: Voltron’s sword and shield are included. The set was first sold at the just-concluded San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s now available to LEGO VIP members exclusively on the official LEGO website. It will go on sale to the general public on August 1. Buy Now $180 Every product on Fatherly is independently selected by our editors, writers, and experts.
