Science Explains Why Grandparents Are Good For Kids And Families

Grandparents Help Raise Happy Adults Kids who grow up to have greater emotional closeness with grandparents are less likely to be depressed as adults, one study shows. The research looked at 374 grandparents and 356 adult grandchildren and included seven waves of data collection between 1985 and 2004, and found that the affinity grandparents and adult grandchildren had for each other reduced depressive symptoms on both sides. Although this study looked at adult grandkids, a similar study of children ages 11 to 16 years echoed these findings....

The special will air Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. ET on CNN, CNN International, and CNN en Español, and you can watch it live on CNN’s digital platforms even if you don’t have a login. Van Jones, Erica Hill, and Big Bird will moderate, with the goal of educating kids about racism and recent protests while helping them become more empathetic and understanding. The network was planning on airing a second COVID-19 town hall last weekend, but it wisely delayed and changed the topic of the special as the pandemic incredibly and unexpectedly lost its place as the biggest news story in the country....

Should Dads And Daughters Wrestle Hell Yes This Is Why

One thing I hear a lot is fathers of daughters refusing to roughhouse with their little girls — or mothers not enjoying the fact that their daughter is wrestling with dad — because, they’re, well, girls, and he’s a man. Roughhousing is commonly thought to be a boy thing. It isn’t. As it turns out, the benefits of rough-and-tumble play are not gendered. They are, however, very real. When Girls Grapple First of all, when a girl is wrasslin’ her pops, she’s getting a physical workout....

Should I Let My Kid Play Toy Blast

Toy Blast is a simple matching game. Players are tasked with matching two or more blocks of the same color until they score enough points to reach the next level — and free the titular toys. It’s rather standard in its play: You have a limited number of moves, there’s a selection of power-ups and boosters scattered about that, when activated, clear the board faster, and coin rewards are given to you at the end of each round....

And, since the pandemic began, many risk-averse banks have tightened their lending standards to avoid a repeat of the 2008-2009 housing crash. If you’ve lost a job or had your wages cut sometime in the last year and a half, you’re far from alone....

Smoking Pot Reduces Domestic Violence In Married Couples

“I would’ve predicted exactly what the study found in its broader strokes,” says Jordan Tishler, M.D., who has worked as a cannabis specialist for more than 20 years (and was not involved in the study). “I would say that cannabis would decrease the incidence of intimate partner violence.” Past research on the link between cannabis and violence has disproportionately focused on people with violent psychiatric and criminal histories. One 2008 study that looked at 269 men controlled for alcohol use and abuse, as well as antisocial personality disorder symptoms, found a positive correlation....

Social Security Recipients Could Get A Major Inflation Bonus Per New Estimate

Social Security benefits are adjusted yearly to reflect changes in the cost of living, but the 2022 increase did not account for the record-breaking inflation that has occurred this year, leaving many of those living on a fixed income in need. Based on new Consumer Price Increase data for the month of June, The Senior Citizens League estimates that the 2023 increase should be 10.5%. And if inflation keeps rising, that increase could rise as well — up to around 11....

Stock Tank Pools Are The Backyard Oasis You Never Knew You Needed

Before we dive in (pun intended), it’s worth noting that installing a stock tank pool is not the simplest job, and livestock water tanks aren’t true replacements for swimming pools. They’re shallow and don’t exactly allow for a long game of Marco Polo. But if you’re up for the challenge, a stock tank pool’s benefits are a godsend on day eight of a West Coast heat wave. They’re also far sturdier than their blow-up counterparts, allowing for year after year of use, and even with their maintenance and assembly, they are way, way more affordable than just about anything else out there....

Stressing About Work Could Be Affecting Your Kids Health

“She didn’t mean to be cruel,” says Scott. “She was just sharing her observation, as children sometimes so brutally do.” But Scott was devastated; the next day, he started looking for a new job. Working long, demanding hours can affect a parent’s ability to, well, parent. But getting an accurate picture of how a parent’s work life affects kids’ health might be more complex — and the effects could be physical in addition to emotional, research suggests....

Surname Of Both Parents Now Automatic For Newborns In Itally

The Italian Constitutional Court in Rome made a ruling that automatically assigning children with the surname of only their father is constitutionally illegitimate. The court went further to say that parents should be able to have a say in their kid’s surname since it constitutes a “fundamental element of personal identity.” Now, moving forward, parents need to mutually agree on the order of the surnames and a child will have both....

Teacher Pay How To Vote To Give Public School Educators A Raise

Those strikes came after, in many cases decades of revenue cuts that benefited big corporations and killed public schools in the state. Many teachers reported taking home three-digit paychecks, driving decades-old cars, and often, working more than one job just to pay rent. But the national negotiation on teacher pay has not gone smoothly. In Oklahoma, more than 2,000 unqualified emergency teachers were brought in to fill positions when teachers started fleeing the state to find better jobs elsewhere....

Teachers Suspended In Texas For Racist Test Question

The quiz asked students to identify “which of these Chinese norms is true?” The question was followed by three possible answers, including people having their lips cut off for burping at restaurants, children being given “fifty lashes by a cane if they steal a piece of candy,” and people regularly eating cats and dogs. The racist answers were criticized by Joy Lim, whose younger sister was in the class. Joy found the question to be “wildly inappropriate” and she decided to reach out to the district to make a formal complaint, along with posting a photo of the question on social media....
